We hope that the holidays were good for you and your family. The holidays past so fast don’t they?
Getting back into the groove of things is difficult. In this post, we’ll give you a few safety tips to follow in both the workplace and your personal life.
If you’re like my family, you’re just starting to put away the Christmas decorations and going back to work. Spending time with all of your family members is the best. At this time, your guard might be down and you aren’t thinking about possible security threats.
Here are a few tips to remember for both the workplace and your personal life:
- Public Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi hotspots are becoming popular in so many places. From the mall, to airports, to coffee shops everywhere. Before you connect to these, consider using a VPN so that all the data that leaves your device is encrypted. Keep in mind that hotspots can be run by anyone, and people can watch and record your network traffic while you’re using them. When you’re in doubt, don’t use it. The chances are that whatever you have to do can wait a little longer.
- Backup Your Data
Make sure that any important data you have is backed up. Your backup can be on a nearby hard drive or stored online with a commercial backup company. For more information, talk to your trusted IT professional.
- Use Passwords
Understand what portable devices store data – for example a laptop, smartphone, or a tablet. Make sure that you have strong passwords and that you have the latest anti-virus and anti-spam software in place.
- Social Media Oversharing
Photos can share lots of information with everyone. This includes: the fact that you might not be home or where you’re staying. Consider waiting to post photos or change the privacy settings on your social media pages so the only people who will see your pictures are the people you know and trust.
- Tech Gifts
Giving or receiving new devices is always exciting. Make sure that you follow the proper safety measures to set it up. Also, make sure that you’re following all the recommendations on behalf of the organization and do a bit of research to make sure you’re not jeopardizing any personal information or any information on your devices that it is connected to.
- Exercise Cyber Care
Coming back to the workplace and catching up on emails and work can be overwhelming and you might put cyber-safe practices to the side. Make sure that you don’t forget these practices. These might include: using anti-virus and anti-malware software, being wary of emails that include attachments, and keeping an eye out for suspicious emails.
