One common IT problem that companies face is related to issues with hardware and software. Read on to learn more about this issue and what you can do to solve it.
Many companies run into issues with the lifespan of the technology – ex, computers, versions of software – they use on a daily basis.
If you are reading this post, you probably already know about how costly downtime can be and why it is so important to have your computer system under warranty. Keep in mind that hardware failures become very common as your equipment gets older. Every company should have a hardware upgrade policy in place to eliminate potential unforeseen cash outlays. When the warranty is approaching its expiry date, get in contact with your IT team and put the hardware upgrade plan in place.
The industry standard is to put your organization on three to five-year hardware refresh cycle, with matching warranties it can be easily served and maintained. Although it is possible that your computer will run for longer than that, it is better to be safe than sorry. If the system crash happens and the machine is out of warranty, the repairs could cost more than a new system/device.
In addition, worse, older, and obsolete hardware and software is “less efficient, increases downtime likelihood, feeds staff and customer frustration, endangers sales, and threatens other lost opportunities.”
So, what can be done to avoid all these problems?
- Retire equipment at proper lifecycles –
As previously noted, a three to five-year lifecycle for your computers is recommended
- Standardize components
- Standardize software applications
- Work closely with an IT consultant
