Cyber Attacks Are On the Rise

By July 12, 2021January 10th, 2024No Comments

You may have heard that Kaseya, an IT management software provider, fell victim to a ransomware attack on July 2, 2021. While they calculate the attack affected less than 60 of their clients, some of them were MSPs. This means it has trickled down and affected thousands of businesses of all sizes around the world, in what is believed to be the largest and most sophisticated cyberattack to date.

Before anything else, we would like to let you know that neither Reis Informatica, our service providers, nor any of our customers, have been affected in any way by this attack.

However, we think it’s important to acknowledge it and take action in order to always stay one step ahead of ill-intended groups.

What Is a Ransomware Attack?

In simple terms, Ransomware is an attack where a company’s systems or data are stolen, encrypted, and held hostage. Most of the time, the only way to recover them is to pay the attackers in exchange for the decryption key.

Ransomware attacks are not new. However, they have been exponentially increasing lately. The number of Canadian companies that have been affected by this particular attack is still unknown. Vivek Gupta, partner and cybersecurity expert at consulting firm BDO, calculates it is already in the thousands. Including many kinds of businesses, from law firms to grocery chains, and even healthcare providers.

What Can Be Done to Prevent Them?
